Second House ProductsGood Shopping practices At the Store

Consumer food safety most likely begins in the supermarket aisle.

There are a few easy steps you can follow to ensure that the food you bring home will arrive there safely.

• Read the label: Don’t buy food that is past the “Best Before end,” “Use-By,” or other expiration dates.

• Check the packaging: Never choose products/items with packaging that is torn or leaking or crushed. Make sure frozen food is frozen solid and refrigerated food feels cold.

• Check the weight: Net weight should usually figure on the facing of the item/pack. It reflects actually the weight without packaging stuff. Don’t confuse net weight with drained weight/volume. Acceptable deviation in weight 2-5% depending on the type of item. Remember some product loose moisture with time which will cause naturally a weight deviation.

Buy clean eggs. At the store, choose eggs with clean, uncracked shells before the “Best Before end” or “EXP” (expiration) date on the carton. When purchasing egg products or egg substitutes, look for containers that are tightly sealed.

Inspect ingredient list carefully. Don’t buy product without clear or missing ingredient list. Incase you are face allergen/allergic constraint read attentively.

Separate foods in your grocery cart. Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and their juices away from other food to further prevent the possibility of cross contamination. Keep them separated during checkout and in your grocery

bags, too.

• Select cold food last. Picking up perishable food like meat, poultry, and eggs at the end of your shopping trip ensures that they stay refrigerated until right before checkout.
